Opening meeting to kick off 60th anniversary celebrations for Albany Soapbox Club

The Albany Soapbox Club will celebrate 60 years of racing down Apex Drive, when it holds its first meeting of the 2022 season on Sunday.

Albany Soapbox Club will launch its 2022 season with a registration day at Apex Drive between 9.30am and 10am on Sunday.

There have been plenty of changes in the 60 years of existence for the Albany Soapbox Club but one thing that has stayed the same is fast-paced racing down Mt Clarence.

Nets have been added down the side of the track, bollards have also been added to protect soapboxes and many sandbags have been placed against curbs to protect the young race drivers.

Racing soapboxes in Albany is open for ages six to 17 with no experience needed.

Albany will host the 60th Australian National Soapbox Championships on the Easter weekend and their RSL Championships in November.

Albany Soapbox Club president Larry Puls said it was fantastic to celebrate an anniversary.

“With our 60th year upon us we are keen to get up rolling and work towards the national championships at Easter,” he said.

“Soapbox racing gives girls and boys the confidence of being in control of a moving vehicle.

“It will and does prepare them to get their licence later in life.

“Our club strives to provide fun and enjoyment for both families and drivers so boys and girls can enjoy this healthy outdoor sport.”

The Albany Soapbox Club also has a tandem soapbox, used to teach kids about control of a soapbox under the supervision of a qualified instructor.
