OFA 2024: Boxwood Hill cause upset of the season over Gnowangerup, Newdegate snare clutch win over Jerramungup

Boxwood Hill caused the upset of the 2024 Ongerup Football Association season, handing ladder-leading Gnowangerup their first loss of the season while reigning premiers Newdegate bolstered their finals chance with a win over Jerramungup.

The Bulldogs have looked virtually untouchable through the first 12 rounds of the season winning all nine of their matches heading into the fixture but were met by an inspired Bombers side on Saturday.

Having come within a kick of the Bulldogs in their first battle earlier this season, Boxwood led at every change on their way to the stunning 10.7 (67) to 5.9 (39) victory in Gnowangerup.

George Stoney was crucial to the visitors’ triumph with three majors while Harrison Joy and Hayden Richter also played key roles.

Harry Creagh and Michael Swarbrick were their other main avenues to goal with two majors each.

Harrison Richardson, Ben Bungey, Jared White and Brandon Wise were key contributors for the Bulldogs while Lewis Davis and Brayden Webber each booted two goals.

Newdegate secured a clutch 32-point victory over Jerramungup to tighten their grip on the fourth position in their premiership defence.

After both sides failed to score a goal in the opener, the Lions scored four of the next five goals to take a 19-point lead into the main break.

With both teams locked on eight points before bouncedown separated only by percentage, the Lions extended the gap on their rivals with three unanswered goals in the last to runaway 8.11 (59) to 3.9 (27) winners.

Dean Rintoul, Kim Newman and Jacob Conti were outstanding in the ladder-shaping victory while Christopher Wollaston and Arron Russell each kicked two majors.

Sean Wisewould, Aaron Winters, Alex Baum and Darcy Barrett toiled hard in defeat and star forward Caleb Keley was kept to just one goal.
