Nullarbor Navajo prevails in thrilling finish to Denmark Cup for local trainer Cheyenne King-Davies
Consistent mare Nullarbor Navajo won a thrilling finish to the $10,250 MCC Contractors Denmark Cup (2265m) at Harold Reid Paceway on Friday night.
Prepared by Lowlands trainer Cheyenne King-Davies, Nullarbor Navajo jumped a $5 chance on the tote in the feature race that closed out the 2021-22 season at the Albany Harness Racing Club.
Reinsman Hayden Hancock settled the five-year-old mare in the back half of the field after jumping from the second row and on the final lap appeared to wait patiently for the sprint lane before switching to the outside in an attempt to chase down the leader and $3.10 favourite Tubbs Farquhar.
Nullarbor Navajo responded to the urgings of Hancock as they reeled in Tubbs Farquhar and won by a short half-head on the line.
The judge called for the photo after the close finish but Nullarbor Navajo got the verdict for the King-Davies stable to secure a memorable Denmark Cup victory for owner Ken Davies.
The result was an eighth career win for Nullarbor Navajo and a fourth in Albany this season.
The Hayden Reeves-trained Tubbs Farquhar was second ahead of Albany pacer Adda Tarantella.
Local trainers dominated the final meeting of the Albany Harness Racing Club season on Friday night as Lang Inwood finished with a winning double.
Inwood claimed the Neville Drummond Memorial Pace (1832m) after Tux And Tails prevailed by a head in a busy finish.
After a rough start, driver Shane Butterworth had the gelding doing his best work late to edge out Step It Up by a head while Kolisi was close up in third place.
Butterworth and Inwood then made it a race-to-race double after Deep Blue was an impressive winner of the Denmark Tyrepower Pace (2265m).
Deep Blue produced a powerful finish to overhaul early leader Rokorico by 2.8m.
Shes A Harleequinn won race three for Lowlands trainer Nathan Dymock and driver Kyle Symington.
Albany’s Adrian Shanks prepared Move Over Miss ($11) to victory in the Denmark Veterans Basketball Club Pace (1832m) and Ravensthorpe trainer John Fagg won the opening event with Sanford Loretta.
Hancock drove Sanford Loretta to victory and finished with a winning treble in the sulky after saluting with Quick Mamba in race eight.
The Alan Murphy Memorial 3YO Westbred Pace (2265m) was won by Captains Cote, to hand Symington the second leg of a driving double.
