North Albany take the points in close tussle with Vikings to start new LGSHA season on a winning note

North Albany started the new Lower Great Southern Hockey Association men’s A-grade competition in winning fashion, as a sole goal proved the difference against Vikings on Saturday.

Last year the Redbacks won just three games in the regular season but still reached the preliminary final, where they were knocked out by Spencer Park.

The new campaign started strongly for Redbacks as a goal from Robert Stan-Bishop was enough to hand his side a slender victory in round one.

Redbacks then defended strongly in the final quarter to collect three points.

Youngster Jack Carlson was outstanding for the winning side, providing plenty of drive in midfield.

Toby Tweddle and also Simon Philpott had plenty of influence for the Redbacks and their defensive unit held firm.

Vikings were best served by Tim Burns, Andrew Hannig and Simon Whitfort.

Spencer Park made an early season statement in the grand final rematch against Manypeaks in the other round one men’s A-grade clash on Saturday afternoon.

Park netted regular goals on their way to a 5-2 triumph over last year’s premiers.

Darren Parkes, Mitch Mitchell Dolan, James Leiper, Alex Fergie and talented new recruit Brodie Sarre all got on the scoresheet in the first-up win.

Charlie Hudson, Tim Yap and Sarre were all terrific contributors for Park.

Peaks were best served by Damen Guest, Taylor Pocock and veteran Tim Pyle while star Mitch Bradbury and Hayden Mills scored one goal each.

Reigning women’s A-grade premiers North Albany started their title defence in strong fashion, downing Manypeaks on Saturday.

Michelle Ericsson was superb with two goals in the 4-0 victory while Felicity Ericsson and Lauren Spinks also found the back of the net.

Kelly Burlikowski and Michelle Ericsson were fantastic for Redbacks while Casey Doak also impressed.

Jemma Sayers was Peaks’ best player and she was well supported by Tash Lewis and Renae Sheridan.

A penalty corner conversion from Annie Judd sealed a 1-0 win for Spencer Park in the other women’s A-grade fixture against Mt Barker.

The two sides were evenly matched throughout the contest but Judd broke the deadlock to hand her side the points.

Rachael Goetze was vital for the winners along with Elsa Curwen and Caitlin Mead.

Laura Archer won plenty of possession for Mt Barker while Tara Simpson and Nekesha Fish also played well.
