David Johnson believes Mt Barker has one of the most exciting young groups in the Great Southern Football League.

Johnson took over as Bulls league coach last season, and despite not playing finals, the experienced mentor has been reappointed for a second year.

The Bulls won five games last season and missed out on finals by just four points, but an exciting young group can lead the club back into the top four, Johnson believes.

Johnson, also Mt Barker’s top cop, said he was glad to coach for a second year.

“I really enjoyed my time coaching in my first year,” Johnson said.

“It was good to come off a few years break and coach Mt Barker, and I really enjoyed working with the playing group and the club.

“Although we missed finals, I could see improvement in the second half of the season and I have come back for a second year to finish off what we started.

“We blooded a lot of young kids last year and it was exciting to see them come through.

“I absolutely think exposing them to that experience will hold us in good stead this season and be a key factor for us rising up the ladder.

“I think we have the most exciting young group going in the competition.

“The likes of Seb Ballard, Camball McMahon and a few colts kids are exciting and they will benefit from getting a taste last season.”

Johnson said the team changed the game plan midway through last season but had started to see improvement within the team by the end of the year.

“It was a risk changing the game plan in the middle of the season but I was started to see the results,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge this season.”

Bulls president Matt Gilbert said the club was delighted to reappoint Johnson.

“We’re thrilled to have Dave’s services again in 2022 as senior coach,” he said.

“He brings a wealth of knowledge, professionalism and experience to our club.

“It’s shaping up to be an exciting season for the Bulls and we believe Johnson’s passion and enthusiasm for the game will bring success in 2022.”
