Man bashed by ‘coward’

A man has been arrested after an alleged “cowardly attack” outside a bakery in Albany on Tuesday afternoon.

A member of the public called the police to Albany French Hot Bread Shop about 1pm after a man was repeatedly punched while he was sitting down just outside the bakery.

The 32-year-old victim suffered bruising and a broken nose and was taken to the Albany Health Campus by St John Ambulance, while police officers arrested the 62-year-old man who allegedly struck him.

Albany police Sgt Gregg Webb said officers expected to lay charges.

“We just need to take the victim’s statement before charges are raised,” he said.

“The victim does not have a memory of the event.

“But I had just spoken to the investigating officer and he’s looking at assault occasioning bodily harm ... from the CCTV footage and from the evidence we have collected now.”

Sgt Webb said police did not know the motive for the assault.

“Apparently the younger fellow was just sitting on the bench and was struck while he was seated so it was a cowardly attack, we can say,” he said.
