Major awards haul for Marwick

Railways captain Zane Marwick was recognised with his finest season to date, snaring every major A-grade award at the Albany Cricket Association awards night on Saturday.

The prolific batsman enjoyed a stand-out season on the back of nearly averaging triple figures with the bat, piling on 673 runs at an average of 96.14.

Through sheer weight of runs, the 23-year-old was recognised by the umpires and fellow captains, winning both the A-grade umpires’ and captains’ player of the year awards, and made it a hat-trick of major awards when he was awarded the Mike Storm memorial all-rounder of the year award.

Marwick (17 votes) edged out teammates Matt Walters (15) and younger brother Coen Marwick (14) in the umpires’ award and enjoyed a four-vote buffer in the captains’ award, polling 27 votes to again finish ahead of Walters (23) and Coen Marwick (22). Last season’s winner Nathan Crudeli came fourth in both awards.

Consistent seamer Coen Marwick was awarded the bowling aggregate trophy with 28 wickets, as well as claiming the Syd Harper award for the best under-21 cricketer in the competition.

Mt Barker’s Steven Scott and Na-rrikup Light’s Alec Haskins shared the B-grade awards, with Scott tak-ing home the bowling aggregate and average trophies after snaring 36 wickets at an average of 6.81, as well as winning all-rounder of the year.

Haskins was the recipient of the umpire of the year award after polling 15 votes, one clear of Mt Barker’s Luke Hammond (14).

The batsman was also crowned captains’ player of the year on 30 votes ahead of Royals’ Ian Attwell (21) and Manypeaks’ youngster Tom Sutherland (20) after claiming the batting aggregate with 649 runs.

Mt Barker’s Jason Jones was the batting average recipient after averaging 103.75 from 415 runs.

Herbie Hart was named umpire of the year.
