Lucky escape for drivers in Albany Highway crash

Two drivers were lucky to avoid serious injury after a crash on Albany Highway near Mt Barker on Saturday.

Mt Barker police officer-in-charge Sergeant David Johnson said just before 6pm, a Mazda ute was turning into a driveway north of the town when it was hit from behind by an Isuzu four-wheel-drive.

The ute rolled off the road before landing on its wheels.

The 4WD also left the road.

Both vehicles sustained extensive damage, with the occupants taken to Plantagenet Hospital.

Sgt David Johnson said police were investigating the crash.

“Given how hard the crash was, a 110km/h impact, it was amazing that everyone walked away without serious injury,” he said.

“It appears the driver behind has failed to see the car in front stopping and turning right off the highway.

“We’ll make an assessment on the crash and proceed accordingly.

“It’s a timely reminder for drivers to pay attention and also allow sufficient distance to brake if a car is pulling up or stopping in front of them.”
