Tuesday marks Valentine’s Day, and as many go to great efforts to show their appreciation for the one they love, spare a thought for the local florists kept busy with a rush on orders.

Some may see the day as little more than a consumerist obligation, or a chance to instead celebrate the platonic love of ‘Galentine’s’ or ‘Palentine’s’, but there is always one thing the day of love is synonymous with — flowers.

For Emma Skippings, head florist at La Botanic, Valentine’s Day is the second busiest of the year after Mother’s Day.

The cafe and florist on Proudlove Parade shifts between 300-400 bunches of flowers on the big day, proving love is definitely in the air in Albany.

“The most popular is our standard mixed cottage-style bunches,” Ms Skippings said.

“And then you get the people who do get roses as well.”

Alongside their normal offerings of curated arrangements, La Botanic also offers single stem roses for those feeling extra-romantic.

And for those among us who’ve left things to the 11th hour, you may still be in luck, with Ms Skippings making sure there are many bunches available on the day to cater for the reliably large number of her clientele who buy at the last minute every year.

Who said romance was dead?
