Lights Beach upgrades are a step closer after Shire of Denmark councillors green-lit a revised concept plan to revamp the popular surfing spot on Tuesday.

A draft plan for the estimated $750,000 project was first endorsed by councillors in April.

The plan included an overhaul of the carpark, new toilet facilities, and the addition of a new timber platform at the base of the stairs to provide a stable descent onto the beach.

Interpretive signs were also proposed to be placed to the side of the lookout path, with information about local Indigenous history, whale-watching and geology.

Shire of Denmark acting chief executive David Schober said after listening to the community’s feedback, the plan was revised to ensure the upgrades were made accessible to people of all abilities, among other changes.

He said community input would also be prioritised in the next stage of the project, with Shire officers expected to know within six weeks whether the project had secured funding.

“Once the funding is obtained then we go into detailed design and get out to tender,” he said.

Mr Schober said he hoped to see the project finished within a year.
