Lest we forget: Albany RSL fundraiser supports Anzac Day services

Albany residents can contribute to the funding of their city’s Anzac Day commemorations by buying a rosemary sprig badge or Anzac candle on Friday.

Volunteers will be raising money for the Albany RSL sub-branch at 10 sites across Albany, selling the badges and candles suitable for driveway dawn services.

The fundraising tables will be situated at Albany Plaza, Dog Rock Boulevarde, North Road shopping centre, Coles Orana, Bunnings, Clark’s Newsagency, Australia Post Centennial Park, outside NAB on York Street and at the IGA supermarkets on the Albany CBD and in Spencer Park.

Volunteers will be manning the tables from 9am until 3pm.

One of the volunteers on Friday will be Deb Masson, whose 90-year-old father Cliff Whittingstall has fundraised for the Albany RSL for more than 15 years.

Mr Whittingstall, an Albany RSL life member, will also be fundraising on Friday, visiting several of the locations across the day.

Ms Masson said it meant a lot to her to be able to contribute to the RSL.

“It’s the least I can do really, with what people have sacrificed for years for us,” she said.

“It feels like it’s the least I can do.”

She said it was also a chance for her to support her father’s commitment to fundraising.

“It is important for me to volunteer to honour my dad’s life’s work, to raise money for ex-service people and their families,” she said.

“Having so many people in our family who have fought and aided in wars past, it’s important for me to honour their legacy.

“We also must acknowledge new servicemen and women who require support and that right to be honoured.”
