Karts line up for zone series opener
Drivers from around WA will converge on Albany this weekend as Albany City Kart Club plays host to the opening round of the South Eastern Zone Series.
Albany members tuned up for the major event last Sunday at their February club meeting, as they prepare to tackle some of the best visiting competitors.
Almost 100 entries have been received for the opening round of the four-leg series, which also takes in Lake King, Esperance and Kalgoorlie.
A big field of 16 of drivers have nominated to race in the Tag 125 restricted medium class this weekend, including locals Stephen Conning, Timothy Harris, Graham Treloar, Damien Stephens and Stacey Eckersley.
Albany’s Riley Munro, Harrison Beres, Mitchell Turner and Seth Collins will contest the cadet 12 category that has 12 entries for the weekend’s racing.
Also with 12 nominations, the KA4 junior light class contains locals Jayden Turner and Mia Collins.
Nominations are open until tomorrow with a minimum of four entries needed for a class to run.
Practice will be held tomorrow before racing begins on Saturday morning.
Heat racing will be run for the majority of Saturday before remaining heats are conducted on Sunday morning.
Last Sunday at the club meeting, Jayden Turner and Mia Collins had a terrific battle in the KA4 junior light category.
Turner prevailed in the overall points, collecting 1373 points to narrowly edge out Collins (1337 points). Cody Colmer was in good form in the cadet 9 division as he won overall by 433 points from William Panizza.
Beres showed he will be a strong contender in this year’s SEZ series after taking out the cadet 12 class with four wins from five races.
He finished with 1409 points to beat Mitchell Turner (1301) and Seth Collins (1105).
Other winners from the Feb-ruary meet were Brandon Elliott (Tag 125 restricted medium), Paul Collins (KA3 senior heavy) and Liam Stronach (KA3 senior light).
