Kangas midfield dominant in emphatic win over Sharks

A dominant midfield display has led North Albany to a comfortable 106-point win over a weakened Albany outfit at Centennial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The round 8 contest never reached any great heights as the Kangas were kept to three goals in the first term before skipping well clear with seven unanswered goals in the second quarter.

With a midfield brigade of Michael Trevenen, Grant Corcoran, Jack McPhee and Matt Orzel all running rampant, the Kangas extended their 67-point half-time lead to finish easy victors, 18.17 (125) to 3.1 (19).

Regan Lloyd kicked six goals in a lively display up forward while Trevenen and Corcoran were both terrific and Orzel booted four majors to go with a stack of possessions.

The only concern for the defending premiers was a knee injury to key defender Stef Ericson.

Kangas coach Craig Dew said it was a case of getting the four points and moving on.

“We had control all day and just bombed it in early on,” Dew said.

“Once we tidied that up we played a lot better.

“We can’t take a lot out of it to be honest.”

Colts stars Fraser Eaton, Kieran Gowdie and Zainel Bin Busu all played colts and their league side was further depleted by the omissions of Jonas Mitchell, Liam Offer and Michael Simpson.

Youngster Callum Redshaw kicked an impressive running goal in the final term while ruckman Stewart Davies and Tait McLean tried hard all day.

“We’ve got injuries and that’s testing our depth,” Sharks coach Kim Mayfield said.

“I was happy with our endeavour and our pressure in the first quarter was very good.

“Their midfield did play very well and they have so much depth in there.”
