Juniors lead way in carnival boost

Albany Surf Life Saving Club has placed fourth in the 2017 SLSWA Country Carnival following an impressive showing from the club’s junior division.

The carnival, which was held in Albany last weekend, saw about 700 competitors come from across the State to compete.

ASLC’s nippers placed third with 131.5 points behind Mullaloo SLSC and City of Bunbury SLSC to contribute nearly half the club’s score, with points also accumulated through the senior division and boat events.

Club president Rob Mason said he was delighted.

“To come fourth overall is an amazing result for the club — we usually finish around the middle at these carnivals so to finish fourth out of 22 we were very pleased,” he said. “For our nippers to come third would probably be the highlight, they’ve been incredibly strong the past two or three seasons.” Overall, Albany finished four points behind third-placed North Cottesloe SLSC, with Mullaloo second and Bunbury winning.

Some of the stand-out performers were Molly Bowles, who won the under-14 board race, iron man and surf race, Angus Bowles, claiming the under-12 surf race, and Fergus Martin taking out the under-13 board race.

Albany also won the open female surf boat event, beating out North Cottesloe and Cottesloe.
