Jockey Kyra Yuill moves to top of the Great Southern jockeys’ Premiership with double delight

Kyra Yuill notched a winning double on locally-trained gallopers to continue her impressive season in the Great Southern on Sunday.

With just four meetings left in the region, Yuill took her season tally to 11 winners and levelled up with Chris Parnham at the top of the Great Southern jockeys’ Premiership after the Albany Racing Club meeting.

Yuill teamed up with Sarah Searle in race three before making it a race-to-race double when guiding the Sherylanne Dombrowski-trained Loki to victory.

Searle joined the training ranks again this season after having seven years off and tasted her second victory with Schoolwork.

The former Eastern States galloper won in Mt Barker in December but produced a brave win in race three to be the first leg of a winning double for Yuill.

After jumping from barrier eight and being stuck wide towards the rear, Yuill made a move around the field and took Schoolwork to the lead approaching the 1000m mark before kicking clear in the straight.

She held off the fast finishing Classic Rogue by a nose on the line.

Yuill made it a race-to-race double when Loki recorded his second victory in the past four starts, proving too strong in race four.

After leading throughout, Yuill was able to boot clear in the straight and hold off all challengers to win by 0.9 lengths.

Lucy Warwick made her first visit to the Great Southern this season and also finished with a winning double.

Warwick was able to steer the hot $1.90 favourite Captain Sharmane to victory in race five for Rogers before saluting in the next race aboard Sweet Angeline trained by her father, Justin.

The promising Rogers-trained three-year-old notched her second win in three starts after spearing through the field in the straight and holding off Rogues Point to win by short half-head.

Sweet Angeline produced a tough win in race six for the father-daughter combination as they clung on to victory by a neck.

Awesome As trained in Bunbury by Malcom Byas tasted success in the last event on cup day , winning by 1.3 lengths ridden by apprentice Keshaw Dhurun.

Steve Wolfe took out race one with Royal Whisper and Natasha Faithfull, clinging onto victory by a half-head.
