A week celebrating the 175th anniversary of St John’s Anglican Church’s consecration wrapped up at the weekend with a fete on Saturday followed by a special service on Sunday.

Wednesday marked 175 years since October 25, 1848, when the Albany landmark officially became the first church consecrated in the then Swan River Colony.

The building has stood on the corner of York Street and Peels Place ever since and continues to hold regular services.

Ahead of the week, the Rev. Canon Karen Cave said it was important to welcome the community to the celebrations.

“Volunteers and donations are vital to the Church, working with the clergy and a host of assistants to meet spiritual, social and practical needs of the community through our outreach and worship services,” she said.

“Our community outreach touches many lives through soup kitchens, emergency relief, prisons, the op shop and much more.”

Sunday’s service was led by Bishop Ian Coutts.
