The return of competition singles in the Lower Great Southern Tennis Association was well supported as part of the second event of the Albany & Districts Tennis League at Lawley Park Tennis Club last Sunday.

The men’s main-draw final was a fantastic affair, going to the wire as Ross Truscott and Vincent Brochard went head to head.

It was a high-quality final as the pair showed strong baseline form early on, with Brochard taking the opening two games before Truscott levelled up at two-all.

Some heavy hitting from the baseline helped Brochard take a 4-2 lead but Truscott fought back hard to level it once again.

Both held serve to leave the final at 5-5 and then Brochard made the winning move, holding serve to go 6-5 up and then breaking Truscott’s serve to claim the entertaining affair, 7-5. Jordan Heil was the victor of the men’s main draw third and fourth play-off, prevailing 6-4 over Les Bairstow.

Impressive youngster Lily Wilsher produced a strong performance to take out the ladies’ singles final, 6-3, over her opponent Deb Mancini.

Barry Atkinson accounted for Matt Laughton in the men’s consolation event, winning 6-1.

Event organisers were encouraged by the numbers in the singles event and attention will quickly turn to the third leg of the league, a men’s and ladies’ doubles day on Sunday, December 1.
