Gunslingers rally for cancer cause

Lockie Cameron and Mark Davidson will brave a 4000km journey in a temperamental 1985 Mercedes 300e as part of the annual Shitbox Rally Cancer Council fundraiser.

The pair, known as Team Gunslingers, will drive through outback Australia from Brisbane to Darwin. Mr Cameron said his son Nathan was the main inspiration for joining the rally.

“(Nathan) being diagnosed with leukaemia in 2013, we were on the receiving end of what entities like Cancer Council actually do,” he said.

“Seeing first-hand the support they offer people that can’t see a light at the end of the tunnel, not to mention the work they put into research for cancer.

“Relocating to Perth for 11 months for treatment puts a lot of strain on a family, and their support was invaluable.”

The Gunslingers have been on a waiting list to participate in the event for three years and will be among the 250 vehicles participating..

Each team must spend no more than $1000 on their chosen car.

Mr Cameron said first and foremost they hoped to raise as much as they could for research and assistance for those in need.

“We also hope to raise awareness of what Cancer Council actually does and why it is so important they can afford to keep up research, making breakthroughs so the treatments are more effective and less traumatic,” he said.

In preparation for the big event, the Albany team held a Gunslinger Golf Day last Friday, which boosted their total raised to more than $6000.

The next fundraising event will be a quiz night at the Stirling Club on Saturday, March 24.

Team Gunsligers start their engines on Saturday, May 19 and will arrive in Darwin on May 25.
