GSFL 2024: Nick Barrow caps off a superb individual season for Kangas league side with Sutton Medal win

Reliable utility Nick Barrow won the Sutton Medal after being named North Albany’s best and fairest at the club’s awards night on August 29. Barrow stood up for his side in a difficult season in which they managed just two wins, showing poise with the ball with his penetrating kick in defence and was swung through the midfield frequently to provide plenty of dash. He finished with 141 votes to clinch the top gong, 42 votes ahead of young midfielder Kobi Keen (99) in second and Barrow was also the only Kangas player named in the Albany Advertiser’s Great Southern Football League Team of the Year. Damaging on-baller Jyrin Woods was third with 78 votes while rising forward Travis Conn (54) and forward turned defender Angus McKercher (43) rounded out the top five. Despite playing just eight games after an ankle injury interrupted his season, Conn was named most valuable player. Drew Willcocks was awarded the Liddiard-Guy Memorial Award as the best team man, Patrick Barnett won the coaches award and youngster Regan Christensen took out the Cameron Family Award after being named the best first year player. Carlton Godfrey won the Life Members Medal as the reserves best and fairest, Blake Tysoe cliched the Blight Family Medal as the colts best and fairest and Luke Pickering was named the Brian Stamp medallist as the best and fairest of the 16s. Adam Ditchburn and Ross Barnett were inducted as life members of the club while Ray Padfield received the Lance Cook Memorial Award.
