GSFL 2023: Former WAFL player Ray Daniels joins reigning premiers Railways for the remainder of season

Railways’ bid for a third straight premiership has received a significant boost with former WAFL player Ray Daniels joining for the rest of the 2023 Great Southern Football League season. Daniels, a former Subiaco and Swan Districts midfielder, played four league games for the Black Ducks and 21 for the Lions across eight years. The 31-year-old also played 63 reserves games from 2013-2018 where he was a premiership player for the Lions. He has also spent time playing more recently for South Bunbury and Collie in the South West Football League. Daniels, son of former Footscray and Claremont player Allen Daniels, will bolster the reigning premiers’ ranks and Tigers coach Mark Bayliss said he will be a useful addition. “Ray definitely brings a bit of extra strength to the team,” Bayliss said. The Tigers are also exploring the possibility of securing former junior Henrick Alforque in their team for the rest of 2023. Alforque is with Swan Districts in the WAFL and has played five reserves games this year. Daniels, Alforque and Lachy Moritz were surprise inclusions for the Tigers in their comfortable win over Mt Barker last week. Bayliss confirmed defender Mitch Green, who injured a hamstring last week, may only miss this week’s clash with Royals. There will be a general bye for the Great Southern Colts Carnival next weekend and Bayliss is hopeful Green can return in round nine. The Tigers face the Lions in round eight of the GSFL competition at Retravision Stadium looking for their fourth consecutive win, while the Lions are out to bounce back from a 61-point defeat to Albany. North Albany face the undefeated Sharks at Collingwood Park while Denmark-Walpole clash with Mt Barker at Sounness Park, both starting at 2.30pm. All games will be played on Saturday with the Lockyer Avenue derby fixture set down for a later start at 5pm.
