The West Coast Eagles suffered a heartbreaking three-point loss to Geelong Cats at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night.

Great Southern trio Sophie McDonald, Parris Laurie and Belinda Smith were part of the Eagles side that narrowly fell to their fourth straight loss.

The two sides were winless heading into their clash with the Eagles coming off a 13-day break.

West Coast were slow to start as they leaked two goals in the opening minutes and trailed by 13 points at the first change before reducing that to 10 at the main break.

The Eagles booted the only goal of the third stanza to reduce the margin to two points to set up a thrilling final term.

The Cats led for the whole game but with 90 seconds left Aimee Schmidt converted her set shot to hand the Eagles the lead for the first time.

However, the lead lasted only 22 seconds as Darcy Moloney proved to be the hero for the Cats , picking the pocket of Eagle Tayla Bresland to kick the match-winner.

The Eagles went down 3.6 (24) to 4.3 (27) in a heartbreaking defeat after pushing the Cats on their home deck.

If it wasn’t for the efforts of defender McDonald and Smith, the half-time deficit could have been bigger.

Albany’s McDonald racked up six disposals and one mark in defence, while Denmark ruck Laurie had 20 hitouts to go with four possessions and two tackles.

Smith, who hails from Pingrup, finished with six touches, two marks and one tackle.

The Eagles were playing St Kilda on Tuesday afternoon looking for their first win.
