School students have been encouraged to hit the books with the launch of the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

The challenge runs until September 9 for all students from Kindergarten to Year 10.

The theme of this year’s challenge is “reading can take you anywhere”, which aims to promote the opportunities that reading can foster.

Students taking part in the challenge can log their read books on the Premier’s Reading Challenge website, which also features a searchable database of 7000 book titles.

Books across all formats can be logged, including audiobooks, and can be of any genre, with comic books and graphic novels counting towards the total.

Weekly prizes are on offer, with students eligible by logging at least one book per week.

Students must read at least 12 books over the challenge to be eligible for major prizes, which include a family holiday.

Prizes will be awarded to the students who read the most books and those who demonstrate a significant improvement in their reading habits.

Warren-Blackwood MLA Jane Kelsbie said she wanted children to experience the joy of reading early in life.

“Reading sparks the imagination and creates a sense of adventure and wonderment,” she said.

“In this year’s challenge, the journey begins when you pick your avatar and choose your first book.”
