FLASHBACK: Tight rope walking The Gap
Back in April, 2014, a daredevil tight-rope walked across Albany’s treacherous The Gap.
Here’s the Albany Advertiser article from April 24, 2014.
Police have slammed the actions of two men who strung a tightrope across The Gap on Easter Sunday and embarked on a death-defying walk across the rocky canyon.
Visitors to The Gap were left stunned and amazed when they saw the stunt, snapping photographs and posting them to Facebook.
One of the men succumbed to his fear and retreated not long after setting off from the ledge, but his friend successfully negotiated the high-adrenaline walk with a safety harness attached.
Eyewitness Sam Newbury, who captured some amazing images of the feat, said there were about 100 people watching.
“I don’t know who they were, they looked like backpackers, ” he said.
“The crowd was pretty pumped, it was pretty crazy because it was windy up there.
“The first guy attempted to go but didn’t, then the second bloke went across OK.”
Albany Acting Senior Sergeant Spencer Tebbutt said officers did not condone the duo’s actions.
“It is something that needs planning in case there was an accident, ” he said.
“No authorities were notified of it beforehand, we only saw it after it was posted on Facebook.”
