Fairy doors found by kids at Wilson Park in day of imagination and fun

Children as young as two experienced a day of imagination and fun at Wilson Park in Mt Barker, designing and finding fairy doors as part of WA Children’s Week.

At the start of the October school holidays, about 60 fairy doors were given to the children, who had free rein to design their door as they chose.

Then, early on Sunday morning, the doors were scattered around the park and the children, who were dressed as fairies and elves, went out to find them.

“They could do whatever they liked to decorate the doors — paint them, stick stuff over them. There was no limitations,” Mt Barker Public Library manager Nicole Selesnew said. “There were lots of excited kids and they brought lots of excited families to come and find their doors.”

More than 200 families turned out for the Fairy and Elf Adventure Day, with funding and support from Healthway, Lotterywest, the Department of Communities, Meerilinga and the Shire of Plantagenet.

The event featured the Cat In The Hat, fairy wand and wing making, bouncy castles, and more.

Ms Selesnew said it was all about supporting kids’ imagination.

“From a library perspective, we wanted to create something that fuelled kids’ imagination — we just wanted to engage with a lot of the smaller kids,” she said.

“A lot of the programs we run are for kids six years and over, so we wanted something that would target that younger cohort of around two-plus.”
