Exciting finishes in Great Southern High School Netball Cup as ASHS win three divisions
Hundreds of players took part in the 29th edition of the Great Southern’s High School Netball Cup held at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre last week.
Netball WA Great Southern hosted the annual event on May 5 as 10 schools from across the region hit the court.
More than 100 games of netball were played on the indoor and outdoor courts in glorious weather conditions despite several squads affected as a result of COVID in the region, reducing the total team numbers from 46 to 42.
In the Year 7-8 girls’ competition, Denmark finished 24-6 winners against Great Southern Grammar.
North Albany Senior High School finished winners over Denmark, recording a 12-7 triumph in the 7-8 boys division final.
Albany Senior High School ran away with a 17-14 win over Narrogin Senior High School in the Year 9-10 girls division final.
Bethel won the Year 9-10 boys’ title, following their dominant 12-4 victory over NASHS in the decider.
In a high-scoring affair in the 11-12 girls final ASHS defeated GSG convincingly, 24-15.
ASHS continued their supremacy in the 11-12 boys division by defeating GSG by eight goals, 20-12.
Netball WA Great Southern regional team leader Kelly Dominiak said they will look to providing additional competitions through the provision of boys and men’s divisions at the Great Southern Regional Championships in July and eventually through the Great Southern associations.
Dominiak thanked all schools for their organisation and effort, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the City of Albany and everyone involved that helped run the event smoothly including umpires, the ALAC staff and volunteers.
