It is almost time for young and emerging artists to finalise their submissions for the Great Southern Youth Art Award which opens for entries next week.

The award is in its second year and is open to creatives up to 18 years old, but those who want to be in the running will need to get in quickly as only the first 70 entries will be in line to win.

There are two categories and two age groups for the awards, with best 2D artwork and best 3D artwork awarded to artists under 12 and artists 12-18 years old.

Winners will receive a $200 voucher to purchase new materials, and all entrants will be in the running for the popular choice award.

City of Albany visual arts officer Indra Geidans said the Great Southern Youth Art Awards supports the development of a vibrant and culturally rich artistic community.

“There’s an abundance of untapped artistic talent among the youth in the Great Southern region,” she said.

“These awards provide an opportunity for young up-and-coming artists to showcase their talents, and it fosters their growth and development so they can hone their skills and take the next step in their artistic careers.”

Three local art industry professionals will judge the awards and successful entries will be showcased at Albany Town Hall, March 15 to April 21.

The submission period will be open Monday, January 29 to March 2, with further details available on the City’s arts and culture website.
