Emu Point Red claim double victory in Lower Great Southern Bowling League men’s first division

Emu Point Red claimed a breakthrough Lower Great Southern Bowling League men’s first division pennant title at the weekend.

It was the first time in 30 years Emu Point Red had won the competition and they had secured the title before the final round was played on their home green.

Emu Point Red completed their dominance of the competition by also winning the pennant flag over Middleton Beach Gold on Sunday.

The men’s second division pennant title went to Middleton Beach Black with a come-from-behind victory that earned promotion to division one next season.

Points are accumulated across a 14-week season, which started in October, with each round consisting of clubs facing off in three rinks of play.

The winner of each rink receives one point or if there is a draw each club receives half a point and the winning club with the overall aggregate, which is all three rink scores added together earns an extra three points for the round.

Emu Point Red finished the season comfortably on top with 69 points to defeat Middleton Beach Gold (53.5) while Albany Gold filled third spot on 48.5 points.

Other teams to compete in first division were Mt Barker Golf (35), Denmark (34), Middleton Beach Green (33), Albany Green (32.5) and Mt Barker Bowls (30.5).

Middleton Beach Black also completed the double in second division after winning the pennant title and flag in the same season.

They won the title on 60 points ahead of Emu Point Purple on 58.5 and Walpole on 53.

Albany Brown (50.5), Albany Grey (39), Mt Barker Golf White (35), Cranbrook (22.50), Albany White (17.5) also competed in second division.

Middleton Beach White prevailed in a thrilling finish to the third division title and will be promoted to second division.

Only 41/2 points separated the top five teams on the ladder.

Middleton Beach White finished the season on top with 46.5 points followed by Emu Point White on 45.5 while Mt Barker Bowls 43.5 rounded out the top three.

Denmark completed a successful season by winning the club’s first flag in a number of years.
