Emerging Albany talent Sophie McDonald shines in West Coast’s seven-point AFLW win over Greater Western Sydney
West Coast emerged seven-point winners over Greater Western Sydney at Giants Stadium in round four of the AFLW season on Saturday, with Albany’s Sophie McDonald playing a crucial defensive role in their second win of the competition.
The Eagles were left reeling from losses to Gold Coast and Essendon in the past fortnight but rallied to upset the Suns and record their first win in New South Wales in the process.
McDonald was given a defensive role on veteran goal kicker Cora Staunton and smothered her opponent to hold her scoreless for the contest.
The Albany defender finished with an impressive six tackles to go with six disposals and one mark and she was named in the Eagles’ best players.
The Eagles’ superb pressure proved the difference in limiting the Giants, as they held on for a 2.4 (16) to 1.3 (9) victory.
Pingrup’s Belinda Smith also enjoyed a solid game to finish with six disposals and four tackles playing in defence.
The Eagles will now turn their attention to a highly anticipated derby clash with Fremantle on Thursday at Optus Stadium.
