Great Southern pair Steven Edwards and Ben Saunders led a brilliant weekend for local products across the WAFL competition as they starred for South Fremantle at league level last Saturday afternoon.

Edwards, a former Royals junior, played one of his best games of the season to be named in the Bulldogs’ best with 24 disposals, seven marks and three inside 50s.

Mt Barker’s Saunders made the most of his opportunities as he kicked two crucial goals to help turn the momentum of the match as the Bulldogs went on to win by 40 points after trailing in the second term.

Saunders finished with 2.2 in front of goal, 11 possessions, two marks and two inside 50s.

It was a big weekend for Great Southern products in the WAFL with no fewer than nine players in the colts side for Claremont that defeated Subiaco by 29 points on Sunday at Leederville Oval.

With a group of Claremont’s colts touring in the Kimberley, current GSFL players Tyron Smallwood, Brandon Woods, Corey Hitchcock, Braden Reta-llack and Corey Linthorne all made their WAFL debuts.

Borden’s Lewis Davis was superb in the win with 22 touches, nine marks and 15 hit-outs and was joined in the best players by North Albany’s Hitchcock, who collected 15 disposals and five marks.

Royals’ Smallwood booted two majors and Railways’ Jordan Clark had 17 possessions and seven marks, while Woods and Retallack both kicked a goal.

Ex-Railways midfielder Bailey Bennett was among the best players in Claremont’s reserves win also on Sunday. Bennett finished with 22 disposals, four inside 50s and four tackles.

Dylan Holt, who also hails from Railways, kicked two goals from 12 possessions and six marks while Dylan Smallwood and Cam Quenby had 12 touches apiece.
