A 47-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital in Perth after crashing into a tree in Middleton Beach last night.

Police say the man had to be cut from the vehicle after it crashed into the tree just metres from homes on Golf Links Road just after 11pm.

Major Crash officers were at the scene this afternoon piecing together the circumstances which led to the crash.

The scene reconstruction indicated the driver mounted the median strip and drove through a roundabout sign and across the roundabout before hitting the tree in front of a home in a 40km/h area.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the car, was taken to Albany Health Campus at 11.33pm with serious injuries before being airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital.
