Albany woman Marg Gregory was expecting a quiet afternoon at home on her 80th birthday, but a pandemic could not stop her friends and family from celebrating in style.

Ms Gregory, who has called Albany home for 48 years, was treated to a special surprise last week when a convoy of balloon-waving, horn-honking friends rolled past her front yard.

The love spread all the way to WA’s top end, where a friend of 40 years now living in Karratha had organised the drive-by spectacle.

Ms Gregory has been treated to a surprise party every decade, but she was expecting to mark this milestone at home with a handful of relatives.

“I told them I didn’t want a party this year but it’s been amazing. I thought I was coming around just to see my family,” she said.

“Every year they have given me a party and I said no this year, but they got me again. I’ve got wonderful friends and I adore them.”
