Descendants reunite to honour Moirs

A heartwarming family reunion took place in Eyre Park earlier this month when descendants of the Moir family met up for the first time since childhood.

The cousins are the grand-children of Alice and Colly Moir, of Amelup, who tragically drowned when their car ran off the King River Bridge in May 1941.

Now aged in her 90s, the only remaining daughter of the couple, Cicelia Sounness, attended the day, along with 13 first cousins and several second cousins. One of the grand-children, Georgi Garbellini, said only two of the grandchildren knew the Amelup couple.

“Colly Moir pioneered and farmed Amelup, just north of the Stirlings, in 1905 and in 1914. He married Alice Smith and they raised six children,” she said.
