The Homeless Project Denmark is in desperate need of food donations ahead of the Christmas holidays as the group says an increasing number of people are on the brink of homelessness this year.

There are just two rental properties listed on realestate.com.au in the greater Denmark area as residents grapple with an affordable housing shortage.

Homeless Project Denmark’s Hazel Moon said this time of year was particularly stressful for vulnerable residents facing housing insecurity or homelessness.

“It’s just really bad timing because more and more people are becoming homeless,” she said. “We have about 15 people due to become homeless so we are collecting food and also bedding, camping gear and things people could potentially need to tide them over until they get a house.”

The group of volunteers has been putting together Christmas hampers for more than 20 years to deliver to people in need during the festive season.

“We do Christmas hampers every year and we like to make nice hampers to cheer people up and also so that people know that we’re thinking of them,” Ms Moon said.

Donations such as Christmas treats, fresh and tinned food items, vouchers for local shops, bedding and camping gear are always welcomed.

Ms Moon said the group had received several caravan donations which they had revamped to temporarily house people until they could find more permanent solutions.

“What we really need is people to help us fix up caravans, people with those type of skills and preferably their own tools,” she said.

Donations can be delivered to the Uniting Church in Denmark or a collection can be organised by contacting the group on Facebook.
