Council votes to rezone land at old Albany Woolstores to ‘urban development’ in preparation for structure plan

Albany councillors have taken a key step in the city’s plan to develop a waterfront precinct, voting at Tuesday night’s meeting to rezone the 16.4ha former Woolstores site. Twelve lots at the old Albany Woolstores site have been amended to “urban development” zoning in anticipation of a structure plan that will transform the site into a community hub. Plans for the site indicate an eight-storey hotel, a shopping centre, housing, amusement centres, restaurants and offices. The subject land sits between Mt Elphinstone and Mt Melville and is bound by the Ring Road, the railway line and Princess Royal Harbour. The site housed the Albany Woolstores building from 1956 to 2021 when it was demolished, having closed up its woolsheds in 1982. Rural Logistics director Mark Dyson purchased the 16.4ha site in 2000. The various sites were previously zoned as light industry, rural smallholdings, local road, and drainage waterway. Councillors carried the motion unanimously.
