Community assistance helps to identify alleged offender charged with violent assault on Albany’s York Street

A 28-year-old man has been charged for his involvement over an alleged violent and unprovoked attack on Albany’s main street last month. Albany police released an image on Tuesday of a man they believed could assist their inquiries into an assault on an unsuspecting couple on York Street on January 30. A male and female were outside the Premier Hotel in York Street between 2.30am and 2.50am when three people riding e-scooters approached the couple. Police say they were set upon by the trio in a violent attack with the man receiving head injuries and being taken to Albany Health Campus for treatment before he was later discharged. An appeal was made to the public regarding information and less than 24 hours later Albany police identified and arrested a man. He was taken into custody at 6pm on Tuesday and charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm. The man was charged and released on police bail and is due to face Albany Magistrates Court later this month. Albany police officer-in-charge Acting Senior Sergeant David Costello praised the community for their help with the matter. “We have located and arrested a man thanks to the support of the community,” Act. Sen. Sgt Costello said. “Public information assisted in us identifying and then apprehending the man. “The Albany community are generally fantastic at supporting each other and this is another example of that. “The quick work of police and the community have led to a good result and I’m really pleased with that.” Police say the trio fled the scene on e-scooters in the early hours of January 30 and they were only notified of the incident weeks later. Act. Sen. Sgt Costello said investigations into the assault were ongoing. “This is not a regular occurrence in Albany, violent offending won’t be tolerated and we want to prosecute those that do,” he said. “We will continue to encourage that community assistance and that is appreciated by Albany police. “We are making some further inquiries into the other two people involved.” Anyone with information is asked to contact Albany police on 9892 9300 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
