Come from behind win by Rovers, who bury Polonia in opening round of GSSA men’s division one competition

Rovers have won their first game of the season in spectacular fashion after a come-from-behind victory sealed all three points against Polonia in the opening round of the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s division-one competition on Saturday night. Polonia’s Nathan Small hit the scoresheet first as he fired home a loose ball from inside the box to put his side in front early. Rovers rallied however, scoring three consecutive goals in the second half to snatch victory from Polonia in round one. Justin Bielecki answered back first for the Rovers, before Basit Ali slotted another home shortly afterwards. Bielecki put the game to bed in the second half as he scored his second for the night, sealing Polonia’s fate as Rovers won 3-1. In the other men’s division-one fixtures, Caledonians and Bayswater were forced to settle for a scoreless draw, with neither team able to find the back of the net. Royals also kicked off their season in superb fashion against Denmark, netting three goals in the second half. Sam Jackson tried to get his team back into contention with a goal, but Royals scored the only three goals of the second half to cruise to a 4-1 win. In the women’s division-one competition on Friday night, Polonia’s Maggie Smit produced a stunning performance, bagging a remarkable six goals in her team’s 13-0 thrashing of Denmark B. Sonics were emphatic 9-3 winners over Bayswater, and Denmark A enjoyed a goal-fest as they finished 7-0 victors against Caledonians. Polonia B also got off to a winning start, downing Phoenix 3-1 in the women’s top division. Mt Barker enjoyed an even contribution from their players as they ran out winners against Rovers, 3-2. In the women’s division two competition on Friday night, Grammar drew 2-2 with Denmark D, Polonia beat Denmark C 4-2 and Royals beat Rovers 1-0. The men’s division 3/4 season started last Tuesday when Denmark Social emerged 5-4 winners over Bayswater Social, Phoenix Social went down to Baysie Masters 3-1, Grammar Griffins’ men defeated Rovers Social 2-1 and Old Boys dominated Polonia Social with a 4-0 win.
