Thousands of car enthusiasts will crowd the city at the 23rd Great Southern Street Machines Association Albany Show and Shine in September.

Cars of all makes and models will greet spectators at the association’s biggest event on the AFL grand final long weekend.

GSSMA treasurer and event coordinator Christine Sargent said a highlight of this year’s event would be the addition of a1/8 mile sprint.

“The biggest thing I’m looking forward too is coming out to Maitraya airstrip for our first-ever 1/8 mile sprint,” she said.

“It’s a 200m sprint; cars racing off against each other down the airstrip.”

More than 100 cars and motor-cycles will be on display at the Albany Agricultural Society pavilions on the Sunday.

Judges will reward owners for their attention to detail, with awards up for grabs across several categories and a trophy for the Best of Show. Also on the program is an auction, a super cruise and various demonstrations.

Mrs Sargent said there would be plenty for car lovers, families and children to see and do.

“It’s a weekend line-up for the whole family — not just car enthusiasts,” she said.

“We’ve been doing this for 23 years, so something is working and it’s still very popular.”

“It’s about that car culture and people showing their cars off.”

This year’s event will be held on September 28 and 29. The 200m sprint is sanctioned by the Confederation of Australian Motorsport.
