Caledonians in hunt but Royals on top

Caledonians remain in touch with the leaders in the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s reserves standings after beating Phoenix in slippery conditions last Saturday afternoon.

One goal in each half was enough to keep Phoenix at bay as Kwa Si Say and Alex Kinnear both found the back of the net.

Caledonians prevailed 2-0 in the round 8 fixture and the result lifted their side to 12 points and a fourth win of the season.

Albany Royals sit on top of the reserves standings following their emphatic 8-1 win over Albany Rovers.

Five goals from Royals’ Jonathon Darby was the difference in the match as the winners slammed six goals past the Rovers’ defence in the last 45 minutes.

Royals are two points clear of the second-placed Polonia, who went down in the other game last Saturday.

Albany-Bayswater took the spoils over Polonia on the back of a hat-trick from James Opuni as his side ran out 5-0 winners.

In Saturday night’s men’s premier league action, Caledonians grabbed a much-needed point as they drew 2-2 with Polonia.

It was the first draw of the men’s premier league but the defending champions are languishing in third place with just two wins from eight matches.

Albany Rovers notched their second win in the past three weeks, edging out Phoenix 2-1 in a tight tussle. After losing their first five matches, Rovers have now beat Caledonians and Phoenix, with Brad Chapman and Justin Bielecki scoring in the win over the latter.

On Friday night in the women’s premier league action, there were two 5-0 scorelineswith league leaders Denmark putting five goals past the second-placed Polonia.

Phoenix were the other big winners as braces from Tianna Korthuis and Emily Amoraal helped their side beat Royals 5-0.

In the other fixture, Port Albany did enough to hold off Caledonians 2-0.

Grammar Blue were comfortable 6-0 winners against Albany-Bayswater in the women’s social league last week and Denmark White beat Polonia Red 4-0.
