Big field to tackle Classic

Numbers are rising for the 2020 Albany Classic, with close to 200 competitors set to tackle the Albany Golf Club course this weekend for the popular event.

Held annually on the Labour Day weekend, entries for the Classic have risen to above 170 this week, and organisers hope to have at least 180 players take to the links course.

Last year’s men’s winner Chris Thompson is not among the nominations, while Albany’s Wendy Ferguson was the ladies’ champion in 2019.

A number of top-level Perth players will compete in the Classic against a stack of local AGC members.

Players will complete 36 holes of stroke across Saturday and Sunday to decide the men’s and ladies’ titles.

The men’s field will have roughly 150 competitors tee off and a field of 30 ladies is expected.

The event was first held back in 1967, with Graham Marsh winning the first edition.

A Stableford competition will also be held over the weekend, with prize money for all events totalling more than $3000.

Schweppes and Cleanaway are the major sponsors of the event.
