Albany Advertiser

More than 150 golfers will contest this weekend’s Albany Classic at the Albany Golf Club, with defending men’s champion Andrei Ezergailis among the big field for the popular tournament.

The Albany Classic is played annually over 36 holes of strokeplay, one round on Saturday and another round on Sunday, with the main trophies for the best gross score.

A total of 153 entries have been received for the classic, from 23 clubs around WA.

Ezergailis, from Royal Fremantle, is returning to defend the title he won last year and is part of a large men’s field of 120 players who will take to the links course.

Albany member Ryan Western, the 2015 champion, is again a main local hope, while Evan Sewell from Manjimup is also in the field after being runner-up in the State Sand Greens Championship held at Mt Barker in 2016.

A field of 33 women will contest the classic, including 2016 champion Margaret Skinner whose home club is Narpanup Golf Club but she is also a country member of AGC.

Other favourites include Jo Jones from Bunbury, Albany’s Kerry Steicke and Susan Plug from Mandurah.
