Artists explore regional heritage

New exhibition Spaced 2: Future Recall rediscovers regional WA from the viewpoint of 14 acclaimed international and Australian contemporary artists.

Presented by International Art Space, it concludes the second edition of the international recurring event Spaced and draws together artists who have worked and lived in WA rurally in 2013 and 2014.

International Art Space director Marco Marcon said the exhibition allowed each project to develop from a multi- disciplinary approach and reflected the fusion of community, artistic, historical and scientific perspectives.

“Spaced takes artists out of their studios to put them in touch with our State’s rich and diverse natural and cultural heritage; heritage that WAcommunities experience and share,” he said.

Perceived as an exploration of collective memories, the showing features a connection to historic Albany, as artists Anna Nazzari and Erin Coates took out a residency at the WA Museum in Albany.

Nazarri and Coates learnt the art of carving imagery into whale teeth by working with scrimshanders, divers, marine biologists, the families of whalers and Albany residents.

Various artworks, including sculpture, photography, paintings, installation and digital media, will be at the art centre until September 2, and artist Erin Coats will present a talk on August 15.
