Andrew Sharpe’s time as leader of City of Albany set to extend to 13 years after new contract endorsed

City of Albany chief executive Andrew Sharpe has been backed by the council to extend his role leading the local government for a further five years. Mr Sharpe was unanimously endorsed by the council at last week’s ordinary meeting to continue in the role he has held since 2015. He said he proud of the City and appreciative to be backed by council to continue in the role “supporting our amazing community”. “It’s a pleasure to work with Council and our talented staff team to drive further progress for our community, especially as we approach the 2026 Albany Bicentenary,” he said. “I want to extend my appreciation to the incredible staff who make up the City of Albany. Their dedication, hard work and unwavering commitment to our community have been instrumental in our achievements. “Together, we have made significant progress and I am excited to continue leading and collaborating with our exceptional team to further enhance Albany.” Mr Sharpe said his experience as Albany’s chief executive had taught him creating a positive environment for the community, elected members and City staff was “of utmost importance”. He said he was passionate about the community and “deeply committed to its growth and prosperity”. “There have been challenges, but with our dedicated team we have managed to achieve an extraordinary amount for Albany,” he said. “I am eager to continue leading our city by working collaboratively with council, staff, and community members to shape a bright future for the region. “As a family we love living in Albany and feel a strong connection to this amazing place.” Mr Sharpe’s longevity in the role stands in contrast to a number of other local government chief executives in the region as well as further afield. Shire of Gnowangerup chief executive David Nicholson took over his role in November and the Shire of Katanning has recently started its search with its chief executive Julian Murphy set to take on the role at Shire of Plantagenet from September. The Shire of Denmark is also on the lookout for its next leader after David Schober announced his resignation in April. Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said stability within local government was paramount to ensuring good working relationships. “It allows for continuity in decision-making, a consistent understanding of the community’s priorities, and the ability to build strong working relationships,” he said. “If we can work together seamlessly, we can leverage each other’s strengths and expertise to drive positive change and deliver the best possible outcomes for our community.” Mr Wellington said Mr Sharpe’s strategic vision had “guided us towards numerous successes”, that he had earned the trust and confidence of council and that his continued leadership will ensure “the best possible outcomes for our residents”. The five-year contract was the maximum length of the contract that could be offered to Mr Sharpe.
