ANA 2023: Big final term powers Railways to second win, Kangas upset reigning premiers and Narrikup go to top

Railways 1 secured an impressive 29-goal victory on Saturday to ensure they remain in touch with the top four after five rounds. It was just the second win in four games for Railways but they are only two points adrift of the top four teams, who all have six points in the Albany Netball Association A1 competition. A 12-goal first term set the tone for Railways before they piled on 29 in the last half, including 15 in a dominant final period against Griffins 1. Lexi Hooper and Ella Scamozzi did the damage in attack in the first half before Tayeesha Weeden was moved to goal attack in the second half as Railways surged to a 53-24 triumph. The work of Shelby Upson and Weeden in mid-court helped Railways open up a five-goal advantage at quarter time. Griffins worked hard to fight back in the second term through Tiffany Butterworth and Jennelle Marwick but the Railways defence was on top and conceded just six goals. Trailing by 11 goals at half-time, Griffins had their best period of the game in the third as Zoe Diletti and Georgia Sheehan combined for nine goals to finish off strong work from Marwick and Felicity Poole in mid-court. Railways, however, still won the quarter as they finished with 14 goals to extend the margin. The defence of Rhiannon Williams-Jolley and Kiera Trevenen were outstanding in the final term as they kept Griffins to just two goals in the emphatic Railways victory. Narrikup 1 moved to the top of the ladder after they got the better of the Magpies 1 by 21 goals. The game swung in favour of Narrikup in the second term, netting 15 goals through the shooting combination of Rylee Davis and Daisy Stewart-Morgan. The Magpies couldn’t match their opponents in the second half and an 18-goal final term from Narrikup sealed the 59-38 triumph. Kangas 1 secured their first win of the season after downing reigning premiers Royals Saints 1 in the other round five fixture. A strong opening term had Kangas in front and they never looked back. Royals Saints trailed by 12 goals at three quarter time and despite outscoring Kangas 14 goals to 12 in the final term, they fell to their second loss of 2023. Narrikup, Royals Saints, Magpies and Bullets 1 are all level on six points in the A1 standings.
