Albany’s young sports stars got the chance to meet some of their sporting heroes last Wednesday with Olympians Josie Tomic and Sophie White attending a celebration of Youth Summer Sports event at the Retravision stadium.

Josie Tomic represented Australia at the 2021 London Olympics in cycling, while Sophie White is an aspiring Olympian who won silver at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in the hurdles.

The Olympians are touring the region, visiting schools and community clubs, sharing their Olympic stories and educating young sports stars on finding their passion, setting goals, overcoming challenges and building resilience.

After a presentation hosted by Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens and Mayor Denis Wellington, the young stars got a chance to quiz the Olympic guests on the challenges facing athletes.

Tomic said she enjoyed her time in Albany and would be back to do more exploring.

“I was so impressed by the young sporting talent that I spoke to and witnessed at the Youth in Sport awards on Wednesday night,” she said.

“Retravision Stadium looked very well maintained and the kids in Albany are very fortunate to have such a great ground and facility to train in and develop their skills.”

White said by sharing her story, she was hoping to inspire young people to be the best in their fields.

“The highlight of this trip has been answering the students’ questions and hearing about their own dreams and goals,” she said.

“It has been so inspiring and a huge privilege to be a part of this tour with Olympics Unleashed.”

Olympics Unleashed is an initiative in which Olympians and aspiring Olympians travel to schools throughout the State to speak with students about their personal journeys, inspiring the students to follow their passions and be the best they can be.

Athletes discuss goal setting, overcoming challenges and the importance of resilience.
