Albany’s Bryce Jackson flushed with emotions after record-breaking six-wicket haul against South Australia

Rising Albany quick Bryce Jackson experienced a whirlwind of emotions after a record-breaking six-wicket haul for WA against South Australia in Sydney on Tuesday. The 24-year-old paceman had a game to remember, claiming the best one-day bowling figures in the State’s decorated history in their agonising two-run loss to SA. In just his second match for his State, Jackson had the ball on a string at Cricket Central, finishing with 6-31 from his nine overs to put WA in a commanding position after the first innings. The emotional second gamer said he relished the chance to play for the freakishly talented WA side after troublesome back injures plagued the start of his career. “I was stoked to be even getting a game to be honest, with the star-studded line-up we’ve got,” he said. “I’ve been working hard in the preseason and everything’s coming up all right, and it’s good to put on show for everyone around. “I’ve had multiple injuries like stress fractures and lower back. “But being able to get through all that and then come out here and take six-fer at Cricket Central — there were a lot of emotions. “It’s just been unreal journey for me and I almost teared up out there a little bit when I got that sixth one so it’s been awesome.” Jackson had the one last chance to be WA’s hero after their monumental batting collapse, where they lost 6-24, before he was stumped for one as WA went down by two runs. “The heart was pounding (at the end),” he said. “I had a simple plan which obviously didn’t come through . . . but at the end of the day it’s all experience going forward. “(We needed to) win those key moments, we were good enough to get ourselves in those key moments and being able to win those . . . would tip us over the edge. “It makes us even hungrier to come in against Queensland next game.” His two searing spells which bettered the previously-held record of teammate Andrew Tye’s 6-46 against Queensland in 2018, included the huge wickets of SA leading run scorers Daniel Drew for 49 and Liam Scott for 46 as WA rolled the Redbacks for 166 on a bowler-friendly wicket. WA won the toss and elected to bowl, but after opener Matthew Kelly and Lance Morris could not find a breakthrough, first-changer Jackson was thrown the ball. After taking an over to ease into his first spell, the Collingwood Park product opened WA’s account with the scalp of talented opener Henry Hunt who edged to keeper Baxter Holt. The 24-year-old then added a tidy double-wicket maiden, strangling Mackenzie Harvey down the leg side before trapping Nathan McSweeney in front three balls later as SA slumped to 3-32. He then added a defiant Scott, who scored 46 from 61 deliveries but was caught behind slashing, breaking a 98-run stand between Scott and Drew to close in on a spectacular five-wicket haul. Jackson added more wickets in successive overs sending Drew back to the pavilion one run shy of a half century to chalk up the memorable milestone before Matthew Kelly caught a pulling Nathan McAndrew the next delivery to give him six. WA’s next one-day match is against Queensland at the WACA Ground on October 13. The young gun, who debuted last season, was left out of WA’s side in their loss to New South Wales on Sunday, but was called up for the game against SA.
