Albany Town Hall’s new lease on life

The repurposing of Albany’s historic Town Hall is well under way, with construction of a new public toilet and equipment transport elevator now visible from the landmark’s exterior.

City of Albany’s executive director of infrastructure, development and environment Paul Camins said the repurposing could offer the community something to look out for during these challenging times.

“The area under construction is the extension of the 1983 non-heritage addition of the Town Hall which includes a new public toilet facility, new equipment transportation elevator, stairwell and a service and storage area to be accessible from Grey Street,” Mr Camins said.

“Internal works on the Town Hall continue to progress and includes heritage preservation works, restoration of galleries and multi-purpose spaces, and supporting upgrades to building services and technology.

“Currently the Town Hall repurposing project is able to continue through what is a challenging period for Albany and can offer something for the community to look forward to when the public restrictions end.”

The repurposing project is expected to be completed by October.

The project aims to restore the Town Hall, originally built in 1888, to its former civic and cultural prominence by increasing the frequency and range of community uses.

The venue will move away from its specialised theatre function to a multi-purpose use.
