A trio of AFL stars hailing from Albany have been selected into the 2024 AFL All-Australian 44-man squad, marking the first time ever that three players from the city have been listed in the squad.

Fremantle dashing half-back Jordan Clark and Collingwood premiership ruckman Darcy Cameron are in line to receive their first All-Australian blazer while West Coast star defender Jeremy McGovern is up for his fifth selection.

It is the first time Clark and Cameron have been announced in the squad while McGovern was also an extended squad member in 2015 to go with his run of four All-Australian honours in 2016-2019.

After an injury-plagued 2023 season, McGovern has been back at his best in yet another tough season for the Eagles alongside teammate and squad debutant Jake Waterman.

Despite winning just three matches this season, the North Albany product has been a pillar in the Eagles’ defence in his 19 home-and-away games, averaging 20.6 disposals at 84.4 per cent efficiency, six marks, 3.2 intercept marks, 4.4 spoils and 7.3 rebound 50s — the second highest in the AFL.

If the 32-year-old is selected in the final side, it will be his first since 2019 which completed a stretch of four consecutive years in the team.

Cameron, also a Kangas product, enjoyed another consistent season for the Magpies playing all 23 matches, spending more time in the ruck.

The 2023 Wellington and Reeves Albany Sportsperson of the Year averaged 15.2 disposals — 10 contested — and 29.3 hit-outs from 65.9 ruck contests with eight being to advantage.

The 29-year-old’s impact forward of the ball has also been a feature of his game this season booting 11 goals and averaging 4.1 score involvements per game.

He joins Brownlow Medal fancy Nick Daicos as the only other Magpie selected in the 44-man squad.

Along with Cameron, Clark is one of 14 squad debutants and one of five selected Dockers — the highest-represented side in the league.

Known for his line-breaking runs off half back, Clark has played all 23 matches this season and averaged career-best numbers including 24.7 disposals at 81.9 per cent efficiency, 6.8 marks and 4.9 rebound 50s.

The final 22-man squad will be named on Thursday as part of the AFL awards.
