Albany painter Antoinette Jackson in team Australia for WorldSkills International Competition in Lyon

A 19-year-old Albany tradie is eyeing a brush with success as she represents Australia at an international skills competition in France. Antoinette Jackson is one of 32 members of Australia’s Skillaroos, competing at the 47th WorldSkills International Competition in Lyon this week in the painting and decorating category. The painter-decorator is one of six West Australians to take part in the six-day competition, which involves 1400 competitors from 70 countries competing in 59 skills categories. Ms Jackson, who will finish her apprenticeship with Bob the Painter Albany at the end of this year, will spend four days wallpapering, colour matching, spraying, completing colour murals, lining, and demonstrating an array of decorative effects. The former St Joseph’s College student said representing Australia was a huge step up, but one she felt ready for. “I made it through the regional, and national competition pretty well, coming first and second but it’s a huge step forward to go from representing the State to the entire country,” she said. “I’m feeling pretty excited, a bit of nerves but they haven’t really kicked in yet. “I’ve been training for a year, so there isn’t really anything more I could do to brush up my skills. “I’m trained as a house painter and there’s so many extra skills I needed for this, it’s so different from my day-to-day work routine but it’s definitely given me a better feel for the trade itself and helped me further develop.” Ms Jackson, who left school to pursue her trade at 15 and travelled to Perth to complete her training, said she wishes people knew the potential of joining a trade. “I left school in Year 10 to pursue a trade, and I’m just so surprised by how far it has taken me,” she said. “It would be good for kids and people in Albany and Perth to know that there is more opportunity for the trades than you think. “I’m travelling the world and I’ve applied to be a national judge at the 2025 WorldSkills Australia National competition in Brisbane. “I get to do my passion as well, so it’s not bad at all.” Team Australia is fielding one of its largest contingents ever, with 32 competitors representing vocational skills including bricklaying, cyber security, cookery, plumbing and heating, and fashion technology. Training and Workforce Development Minister Simone McGurk said the competition gives young vocational students and apprentices an opportunity to showcase their skills on the world stage. “We have a world-class vocational training system with plenty of opportunities, and Team WA’s Skillaroos are showing other young people what is possible,” she said. “After honing their skills and practising their projects throughout 2024, our West Aussie Skillaroos are excited to touch down in Lyon and put their skills to the test against the world’s best. “I’m extremely proud of our Skillaroos and I look forward to cheering them on as they chase medals in Lyon — I’m sure they’ll skill it!” The competition runs from September 10 to 15.
