Albany Gold cause big upset in ladies’ first division pennant competition

Upsets, away winners, champs making their move, thrashings and thrillers were the highlights in the latest rounds of the Lower Great Southern Bowling League.

In ladies’ first division it was the upset of the season as Albany Gold beat reigning pennant holders and ladder leaders Emu Point Red 3 (37) to 1 (31).

Cranbrook were beaten at home by Albany Green in a one-shot thriller 3 (39) to 1 (38) as Mt Barker Golf consolidated their position in the four with a 3 (40) to 1 (30) win over Middleton Beach White.

Denmark Aqua shot to the top of the ladder with a win against Middleton Beach Green 3.5 (45) to 0.5 (37).

The ladder is extremely tight with just 4.5 points separating first from fifth, with a vital few rounds ahead.

Ladder leaders Emu Point Purple had a close win against Denmark Orange 3 (42) to 1 (40) in ladies’ second division, while Mt Barker Golf produced a morale-boosting effort to defeat Middleton Beach Red 4 (34) 0 (26).

Middleton Beach ladies have recently hosted their annual Invitational Fours Carnival, with the team from Mosman Park: Renata Coote, Shelley Radcliffe, Wendy Stower and Jacinta Zadow emerging as winners from second place-getters Paula Reid, Bev Broom, Kylie Shinzig and Shelley Bilney of Kojonup.

In men’s first division, pennant holders Emu Point Red continued their recent good form with an important away win at Denmark 5 (68) to 1 (53) as Middleton Beach Black continued to top the ladder with an impressive one-shot away win against Albany Gold, 5 (52) to 1 (51).

The other two matches produced more upsets as Middleton Beach Gold lost at home to Mt Barker 6 (59) to 0 (46) and Albany Green had an important away win over Middleton Beach Green 6 (67) to 0 (58).

Second-division ladder- leaders Emu Point Purple remained the only undefeated side as they had a strong victory against Mt Barker Golf White 5 (72) to 1 (58).

Mt Barker Golf Red delivered a hammering to visitors Albany Brown 6 (80) to 0 (34).

Cranbrook hosted Albany Grey and were defeated 5 (63) to 1 (59), and Walpole won by forfeit against Mt Barker.

There was a one-shot thriller in third division as Frankland hosted Mt Barker Golf Blue and lost 4 (57) to 2 (56), while ladder leaders Emu Point White thrashed Middleton Beach Lime 5 (69) to 1 (33).

Denmark also produced a huge win against reigning pennant holders Green Range 6 (98) to 0 (37), while Middleton Beach White defeated Albany White 5 (66) to 1 (49).
