A return to winners list for Sonics after tense win while Sonics Blue jump to second spot on women’s standings

Sonics held off a persistent Railways outfit in round 13 of the Albany Basketball Association women’s A-grade competition while Sonics Blue jumped to second spot on Tuesday night. Despite their win over Railways, Sonics are unable to make the finals given they sit seven points behind Bethel Breakers with three rounds remaining. Sonics notched their fifth win of the season after outscoring Railways by nine points in the final 25 minutes. After trailing by three points at half-time, Sonics quickly took the lead in the opening minutes of the second half and opened up a five-point lead with 10 minutes left on the back of netting 13 of the first 18 points in that period. The two sides traded blows in the final 10 minutes but Sonics hung on 32-26 in a physical contest. Ella Scamozzi gave plenty of drive in the win finishing with 13 points, eight of which were in the first half, while Aleesha Narkle (six points) and Amber Nekel (six) were also important. Playmaker Nardia Humphries was impressive for Railways with nine points while Jemma Quintrell also knocked down nine points and Rylee Davis (six) battled hard with a stack of rebounds. Sonics Blue handed Infernos their third straight loss and in the process replaced them in second spot after their 10th win of the season. Scores were level at half-time but Sonics Blue scored the last six points of the game to prevail 23-22. Shianne Arthur hit nine points in the win and Georgia Clark added seven for Sonics Blue while Tay Weeden (seven) and Charlotte Edwards (seven) led the way for Infernos. Abbi Gibson and Rebecca Benson guided Barking Owls to their fifth straight win as they won easily over Griffins, 52-33. Gibson hit 23 points and Benson added 21 in the 19-point triumph while Rhiannon Williams-Jolley (13) top scored for Griffins who are still in the hunt for a top-four spot. Six triples from star Brodie Dixon helped Bethel Breakers move a step closer to securing a finals berth as they defeated Raiders nder-18s, 45-30. Dixon was the difference in the 15-point result knocking down 36 points as Bethel Breakers moved five points clear in fourth spot.
